Lifelong Learning as a Sustainable Investment
24.07.2025At Hamilton, sustainability means more than just protecting the environment and climate. We also invest sustainably in the personal and professional growth of our employees. Martina Cavegn’s story shows how this kind of investment can lead to long-term success – both individually and for the company.

When people think of sustainability, they often think first of reducing CO2 emissions or conserving resources. But sustainable action goes far beyond that – it also includes the United Nations’ fourth Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG 4): “Quality education and lifelong learning for all.” This goal is an integral part of our sustainability strategy, particularly within the pillar of “People”, where we are committed to equality, fair working conditions, and continuous development.
Martina’s Remarkable Journey
At Hamilton, anyone who wants to grow – professionally or personally – receives support, whether financial, organizational, or in the form of time off.
Martina Cavegn is a prime example. Her career began with an apprenticeship as a design engineer at Hamilton. After completing it successfully, she moved to the United States, where she joined our engineering team in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. There, she not only strengthened her English skills but also gained valuable international work experience.
Upon returning to Switzerland, Martina enrolled in a part-time degree program in Systems Engineering with a focus on Mechanical Engineering at OST University of Applied Sciences. Hamilton supported her through time allowances and financial contributions. Today, Martina works as a Systems Engineer in our Storage business unit, which develops automated storage systems for lab samples.

Dedication That Makes a Difference
Martina’s commitment has shaped not only her own development but has also benefited Hamilton. She played a key role in establishing the Storage unit and continues to help shape new product generations with her expertise. In particular, she collaborates closely with the development department on the design and climate control of new systems to ensure the highest quality standards.
Martina’s thirst for knowledge is far from quenched. She is currently pursuing another part-time degree in Computational and Data Science at the University of Applied Sciences of the Grisons (FHGR). There, she combines scientific computing with modern data analysis – skills she uses directly to optimize our systems. “I’ve always enjoyed analyzing data, but I lacked the programming knowledge. Now I can bring both together,” she says.
Her team leader, Christoph Cajacob, also sees the value: “The volume of data in our systems continues to grow. Thanks to specialists like Martina, we can analyze this data effectively and further optimize our systems – for example, by improving positioning accuracy and temperature stability.”
Over 130 Further Education Agreements in 2024
Each year, Hamilton supports many employees in their education and training efforts. In 2024 alone, more than 130 continuing education agreements were signed. In many cases, Hamilton contributes financially or offers time flexibility – in return for a fair commitment to remain with the company for a certain period.
Martina’s journey is a perfect example of our philosophy: lifelong learning is a central part of our corporate culture.
