Consistent, sustainable, efficient – the new packaging project at Hamilton

23.06.2026

Hamilton has launched a comprehensive packaging project that brings together sustainability, efficiency, and modern branding. At its core is not only the redesign of packaging for around 1,500 different standard products in the Process Analytics segment, but also a strategic realignment of the brand under the umbrella of “ONE Hamilton.”

Why a packaging project?

This initiative is part of a broader transformation process with sustainability at its center. Following the launch of our new website last year and the introduction of the “ONE Hamilton” brand platform, the company aims to create a more consistent visual appearance. A key element is the unified presence of the Robotics, Laboratory, Process Analytics, and Storage divisions.

Focus on sustainability

The existing packaging solutions, including Styrofoam, which previously generated an annual volume of around three tons, are being systematically replaced with more sustainable materials. For the inserts, Hamilton uses an innovative material based on paper fibers. It resembles high-quality egg cartons and is processed using injection molding. This process combines high functionality and strong product protection with an appealing look and feel.

Thanks to its precise formability, the material enables the production of complex shapes that securely hold a wide range of products and fix them reliably using integrated clips and clamping structures. These inserts are used to hold the sensors. With only four different variants, all products can be packaged efficiently and safely.

For outer packaging, Hamilton relies on cardboard and paper sourced from European and Swiss production, keeping transport distances short and reducing CO₂ emissions. Packaging for the Swiss market is produced in Switzerland, while packaging for Romania is manufactured locally. Disposal processes are well established, and all packaging is clearly labeled with recycling instructions.

In addition, Hamilton is replacing plastic bags with paper bags for the individual packaging of cables and sensors. Printed manuals will soon be phased out: all product information will be made available digitally via the customer portal – saving not only paper but also space and weight.

Efficiency as a core objective

In addition to environmental aspects, increasing efficiency is a key objective of the project. Different packaging sizes increase logistical complexity and drive up costs. To address this, Hamilton uses compact, standardized packaging that contains as little empty space as possible – an advantage for both storage and shipping.

Cost efficiency remains a constant priority: despite higher requirements in sustainability and design, costs must not increase. To achieve this, interfaces with suppliers are reduced, delivery processes are optimized, and products are equipped with standardized labels, this is the first step to be implemented.

Making “ONE Hamilton” visible in packaging

The project also strengthens brand visibility. The packaging design is developed in close collaboration with the Romania site and follows the principles of the new brand platform. The goal is a consistent outward appearance that reflects the brand promise of innovation, quality, and responsibility.

To ensure transparent communication, each new package will include a flyer explaining the changes, the sustainability approach, and the new brand identity.

A long-term project with a clear vision

The rollout of the new packaging will take place gradually through the end of 2026. This approach allows existing packaging materials to be used up responsibly and ensures smooth transitions. At the same time, it provides sufficient time to consistently guarantee product safety.

Greener Pipetting, Measurable Impact

With the world’s first automation-compatible pipette tips made from bio-circular material, Hamilton enables research institutions to drastically improve their CO₂ footprint — without compromising on precision or quality.
